Biography[]

Monaghan was born in Berlin, West Germany, to British parents Maureen and Austin Monaghan. His mother is a nurse, and father, a science teacher. His brother, Matthew Monaghan, is the primary songwriter and co-lead vocalist of the indie band Radiosepia.[3][4]

Monaghan's family lived in Berlin, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart and Münster, moving about every four years. When he was about eleven years old, his family moved from Germany to Heaton Moor in Stockport, England. Dominic attended St Anne's Roman Catholic High School in Stockport, where his uncle taught and later became head teacher, and Aquinas College, where he studied English literature, drama and geography.[1]

When he was member of Manchester Youth Theatre, Dominic was offered the co-starring role in the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, a series that ran from 1996 to 1998. In 2000, Monaghan later starred in This Is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper and Monsignor Renard, which starred John Thaw.[1]

To date, Monaghan is best known for his role as Merry Brandybuck in the film adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, and Charlie Pace in J.J. Abrams's LOST.[1]
